Passengers in helmets on a boat between the sheer Vestmanna sea cliffs

Vestmanna bird cliffs by boat

A 90-minute boat from Vestmanna harbour under the Vestmannabjørgini cliffs and into their grottoes, summer only, 40 minutes from Tórshavn; the operator posts no price.

The Vestmanna boat is the Faroese sea cliff from below, and the decision is about the day's shape rather than the money, because the money could not be read. The sailing is about 90 minutes from the harbour at Vestmanna along the north-west coast of Streymoy, under cliffs that rise several hundred metres straight from the water, and into the grottoes and between the stacks when the sea allows. It suits every party on the ferry journey's Tórshavn nights and any age; it does not suit a rough day, when the boat goes somewhere else.

What the operator's page says, read today: "approximately 90 minutes boat tour"; thousands of seabirds have their home on the cliffs in summer; book in advance; bring warm clothes and dress for the weather; sea conditions can limit entry into the caves and access to the shore, in which case an alternative tour is offered to the south side of Vágar to see the Trøllkonufingur sea stack. The booking calendar on the page showed its next departure as 22 March 2027 at 10:30. No fare appears on the page, and the national tourist board's listing, which gives the same operator's phone and e-mail and says "the tour takes a couple of hours and is suitable for all ages" and that in summer there are tours until late in the evening, has none either. One company runs these sailings from Vestmanna; it is named on the pages linked and not recommended here.

The arithmetic for the ledger: 90 minutes on the water plus the boarding, so 120 on site at the long end. From Tórshavn, the sleep town on the ferry journey, Vestmanna is about 40 km by the Streymoy road, roughly 40 minutes each way, so 80 minutes of detour. Add the 30-minute booking buffer and the boat costs a Tórshavn night 200 minutes. The journey's day four already spends 135 km on Saksun and Vestmanna together; the boat is the afternoon of that day and the detour is counted there.

The cliffs themselves, Vestmannabjørgini, are the reason the boat exists: a west-facing wall with guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and puffins on the ledges in the nesting months, and caves at sea level that a small boat can enter when the swell is down. The operator's own line about summer evening tours matches the light, which is on the cliff from the west late in the day.

What goes wrong

The sea, first and always. A swell from the west or north-west closes the grottoes and the operator switches to the Vágar south coast, which is a different and shorter sight; its page does not describe a refund for that case, so ask before you pay. Fog, second: the cliffs vanish and the birds are sound only. The season, third: neither page gives dates, the booking calendar is the only source, and a plan built on a May departure may find none. Cold, fourth: 90 minutes on open water in the Faroes is cold in July, and the operator says so.

Alternatives on the same road

Saksun, on the same day, is the free hour: the tidal lagoon, the turf-roofed church and the walk to the beach at low tide. The Vestmanna tunnel to Vágar leads to Gásadalur and its waterfall in 40 minutes. For birds without a boat, the cliffs at Vestmanna can be walked above from the village in summer on marked paths; not checked today. Mykines, the puffin island, is a ferry or a helicopter from Vágar and a different day.

Practical line: fuel and a shop in Vestmanna; toilets at the harbour; the Streymoy road from Tórshavn is paved and open all year; the Vágar tunnel is tolled by the plate.

Questions people ask

Why is there no price?
Because neither the operator's page nor the tourist board's listing showed one today, and this site does not estimate. The booking calendar on puffin.fo gives the fare for a chosen date; read it there and date it.
What is the boat like?
A small passenger boat that goes close under the cliffs and, in calm water, into the sea caves and between the stacks; helmets are issued for the grottoes in past seasons. The operator says the tour is suitable for all ages and to dress for the weather.
What if the sea is up?
The operator's page says sea conditions can limit entry to the caves and access to the shore, and that it then offers an alternative tour to the south side of Vágar to see Trøllkonufingur. It does not describe a refund; ask when booking.
Can I combine it with Saksun?
Yes; the ferry journey's day four does both, 135 km from Tórshavn and back. Saksun in the morning, the boat in the afternoon or evening, and the Vestmanna road home.

What this page adds

A 200-minute cost to a Tórshavn night built from the operator's 90-minute sailing, the 40 km drive each way on the Streymoy road and a booking buffer — the figure the Faroe ferry journey's Saksun-and-Vestmanna day already absorbs.
