Saksun

Saksun sits at the end of a long single-track valley road off the main Streymoy spine, which is why it works best as the first stop of a northern Streymoy loop (Saksun, then Tjørnuvík, then across to Eysturoy) rather than an afterthought on the way to the airport. Budget an hour in the village and an hour of driving to get in and out from the Hvalvík junction; the passing places are frequent but a coach coming the other way costs minutes.
The reason to stop is the shape of the place: a tidal lagoon closed off by a sand bar, a turf-roofed church above it and the old farm of Dúvugarðar, which opens as a museum from 1 May to 30 September, daily 10.00 to 16.00, at DKK 150 for adults with children under thirteen free. The farm's own page is blunt that the village is the family's home, and the walking trails to the waterfall and viewpoints are marked for that reason. Treat everything off those trails as a field with an owner.
The walk out across the lagoon to the beach is a tide decision, not a time decision; go on the ebb and turn back the moment the water starts to cover the sand. There is no fuel, no shop and no café worth counting on; the last supermarket is on the main road at Hvalvík or back in Tórshavn.
Quiet is early morning and any day with rain in the forecast, which thins the hire-car traffic sharply. In winter the road is normally open but Landsverk's driving-conditions page is the authority, not the forecast.
