Vestmanna

Vestmanna is the west-coast harbour town on Streymoy where the bird-cliff boats leave, and on a route it is a half-day block rather than a drive-past: the cruise under the cliffs north of town takes, in the official listing's words, a couple of hours, and you need to be at the quay before it. The Visit Faroe Islands entry for the operator gives the address as Fjarðarvegur 2 and notes that summer sailings run until late in the evening, which is useful if you are coming off an afternoon flight into Vágar, since the airport is a short way back along the same road.

The practical case for Vestmanna is that it is a proper town on the way to somewhere else. It has fuel, a supermarket and a harbour car park, so it is the sensible place to fill up and buy food before the northern Streymoy dead-ends (Saksun, Tjørnuvík) where there is nothing. From the Tórshavn side the road comes over the hill from Kvívík; from Vágar you arrive through the Vágatunnilin, which is tolled only in the Vágar-bound direction (tunnil.fo, read today).

Sea state decides the day. The boats go into grottoes and along a swell-exposed coast, so a cancelled sailing is normal, and you should hold a loose plan for the afternoon rather than a booked one. Quiet on the water is the first departure of the morning.
