The buggy tour from Vík is a guided hour on the black sand east of Reynisfjall, driving your own off-road buggy with the Reynisdrangar stacks across the water. The operator running it today is Katlatrack, a Vík company whose base is at Austurvegur 16, by the OB fuel station. It suits families with children of six and over, travellers sleeping in Vík with an hour to fill, and anyone who wants the beach without walking it. It does not suit a tight budget: at 25,900 ISK a head (1 November 2026), it costs about 26 times the Reynisfjara car-park fee.

The figures, read today on katlatrack.is. The Black Beach Buggy runs all year, lasts one hour, is rated easy, has a minimum age of six and starts from the Katlatrack base; it is listed from 25,900 ISK per person. A shared ride puts two people from one party in one buggy; a single ride is a buggy each. Drivers must show a valid physical driving licence at check-in. Helmet, balaclava and waterproof overalls are supplied, along with a safety briefing. Group tours take a minimum of two and a maximum of 12 guests. The same operator lists a Þakgil Buggy of 2½–3 hours from 40,500 ISK, a private beach buggy from 120,500 ISK and a private Þakgil buggy from 197,500 ISK (all 2026-11-01). The operator's FAQ says guests enter the base building and check in at reception; a pizzeria inside the base gives tour guests 10% off.

The arithmetic

From a Vík bed the base is 0.3 km away, a minute by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, so the cost is the tour and its margins: 60 minutes out, 15 for check-in and kitting up (the operator gives no check-in time, so this is an assumption), and a 15-minute buffer, about 90 minutes. The seven-day and ten-day Ring Road journeys sleep in Vík on day 1, and the five-day South Coast and Golden Circle on day 3, so the evening of arrival or the next morning both work. From Hvolsvöllur it is 81 km and 70 minutes each way, about 230 minutes; from Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 73 km and 65 minutes each way, about 215.

What goes wrong

Weather: the operator cancels in extreme conditions and then offers a new date or a full refund; it reserves the right to change or cancel at short notice for safety. Roads: if the Ring Road is shut and you cannot reach Vík but the tour runs, there is no refund, so in winter sleep in Vík the night before. Changes of plan: at least 48 hours' notice gets a full refund less a 5% transaction and service fee; inside 48 hours there is none. Delays: mechanical problems can delay a tour without compensation; a long delay brings the offer of another time or a refund.

Alternatives on the same road

On foot and for the price of parking, the Reynisfjara beach walk faces the same stacks from the west. Twenty minutes east, the Þakgil canyon walk is the walking way into the canyon the longer buggy tour drives. From the same base, Katlatrack also runs the Katla ice cave trips.

Questions people ask

Only to drive. The operator says anyone driving a buggy must show a valid physical car driving licence at check-in; passengers need none. Minimum age for the tour is six.
Shared or single?

What is provided?
A guide, a safety briefing and driving instructions, helmets, balaclavas and waterproof overalls. Bring footwear suited to the weather.
What if the weather is bad?
The operator cancels in extreme weather and offers a new date or a full refund. If the road to Vík is closed for you but the tour runs, it does not refund.
