The opera roof and MUNCH are the two halves of Oslo's harbour front at Bjørvika, and together they fill a first afternoon in the city for little money and no transport. The roof is free: a sloping marble surface you walk up from the quay, which Visit Norway's page heads "Please walk on the roof!" MUNCH, the Edvard Munch museum in the leaning tower next door, charges an adult NOK 220, under-25s NOK 100 and nobody under 18 (munch.no, read 1 November 2026). It suits anyone with three or four hours between the airport train and dinner. It does not suit someone who wants the old Oslo; that is the other side of the centre, around the fortress and the palace.
What the pages say: MUNCH is open Sunday to Tuesday 10:00–18:00 and Wednesday to Saturday 10:00–21:00, and is free on the first Wednesday of the month from 18:00 to 21:00 except in July, August and September. The opera's foyer is open Monday to Saturday 11:00–16:00 and Sunday 12:00–16:00, or until the end of the performance. Its guided tour lasts about 50 minutes, costs NOK 180 for an adult and NOK 105 for a child, is given in English on Saturdays and Sundays, starts on the hour, and goes on sale on the Tuesday of the same week. Visit Norway's page gives the opera's opening year as 2008 and its architects as Snøhetta. Neither page read today printed hours for the roof itself.
The arithmetic
Measured on OpenStreetMap footpaths with the OSRM foot profile and converted at 80 m a minute (computed 1 November 2026): Oslo S, the central station where the airport train arrives, to the opera is 594 m, about 7 minutes; the opera to MUNCH is 535 m, about 7 minutes; Oslo S straight to MUNCH is 787 m, about 10 minutes. Thirty to forty-five minutes on the roof, two hours in the museum, the two walks and a 30-minute buffer make 240 minutes. On the stopover journey (/journeys/copenhagen-or-oslo-stopover-2-days) that is the afternoon of the Oslo day, with no car and no ticket booked in advance.
The light matters for the roof. Computed with the NOAA solar equations for Oslo, the sun sets at 16:22 on 1 November and 15:12 on 21 December, and at 22:44 on 21 June. In winter, go up the roof first and do the museum after dark; on a Wednesday to Saturday, MUNCH is open until 21:00.
What goes wrong
Ice and rain, first: the roof is marble, and Visit Norway's own advice is sneakers. Events, second: the roof and the foyer are used for concerts, and the opera's pages give an e-mail and phone line (post@operaen.no, +47 21 42 21 21) for questions. The tour, third: it is English only at weekends, and tickets appear on Tuesday. Monday, fourth: everything here is open, while Norsk Folkemuseum closes on Mondays from October to April and the Vigeland Museum opens Tuesday to Sunday (their pages, read 1 November 2026), so this pair is a sound Monday plan.
Alternatives on the same road
The Oslo guide on this site (things to do in Oslo) times ten sights from Oslo S, including Vigeland's park, which is free and open around the clock. For a fjord from the water rather than from a roof, the western fjords start with the Geirangerfjord boat and the Flåm Railway. The Oslo stop has the city toll figures for anyone arriving by car.
