The bronze fountain and the long main axis of Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo in summer

Things to do in Oslo, timed from the central station

Ten Oslo sights with walking minutes from Oslo S, the price read on each venue's page on 1 November 2026, and when the Oslo Pass pays for itself.

Oslo's sights fall into three walks and one boat or bus. From Oslo S, the station where the airport train arrives, the opera roof is 7 minutes on foot and MUNCH 10; the fortress, the city hall and the National Museum are 16 to 21 minutes west along the harbour; Vigeland's sculpture park is 47 minutes away, a tram ride; and the Bygdøy museums are across the water. One day does the harbour and one museum; two days add Bygdøy and Vigeland. Every figure below was read on the venue's own page on 1 November 2026 or computed that day.

The harbour walk

The opera and MUNCH are the pair for a first afternoon: the roof is free, MUNCH costs NOK 220 and is free on the first Wednesday of the month from 18:00 to 21:00, except July to September (munch.no). The detail, with the walk measured between them, is in Oslo Opera House roof and the MUNCH museum. West along the water, the city hall and the fortress are 16 and 17 minutes from the station. The city hall opens Monday to Saturday 09:00–16:00 and is shut on Sundays and on the event days the municipality lists (in 2026: 20 November, 5–11 December, 24–26 and 31 December); its hours page names no admission charge, only a security check (oslo.kommune.no). The fortress site refused the connection today, so no hour is printed for it.

Vigeland and the west

Vigeland's FAQ says the park is "free and always open - 24/7", holds more than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland and his crew, and is reached by tram 12 or 15 or bus 20 to the stop Vigelandsparken. The Vigeland Museum nearby opens Tuesday to Sunday 12–16 and charges a fee the page did not state. On foot from Oslo S it is 47 minutes, which is a walk only on a fine day.

Bygdøy

The peninsula is the museum half-day. Norsk Folkemuseum, the open-air museum of old buildings, opens Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–16:00 from 5 October to 30 April and every day 10:00–17:00 from 1 May to 4 October, closed 1 January, 17 May and 24–25 December, and charges an adult NOK 200 (norskfolkemuseum.no). The Fram Museum, built around the polar ship, gives "open 365 days a year", 10:00–17:00 today, adult NOK 180 and child NOK 70 on its front page. The Viking Ship Museum is not an option: the University of Oslo's museum notice says it closed on 1 October 2021, and the new Museum of the Viking Age's own site, read 1 November 2026, says it is "not open yet" and gives no opening date (vikingtidsmuseet.no).

When the Oslo Pass pays

visitoslo.com's table, read today: adult NOK 580 for 24 hours, 845 for 48 and 995 for 72; senior 465, 675 and 795; child 290, 420 and 495. It includes free entry to more than 30 museums and attractions and unlimited public transport, including to and from Oslo Airport Gardermoen. The sum for a single adult day: MUNCH 220, Norsk Folkemuseum 200 and the Fram 180 make NOK 600 at the door, NOK 20 more than the 24-hour pass before any transport. Two museums do not cover it; three do, just. For children and under-18s the arithmetic is different, because MUNCH and the Folkemuseum are already free for them. Which venues the pass includes is on visitoslo.com; this post did not check the list venue by venue.

The light

Computed with the NOAA solar equations for Oslo: sunrise 07:39 and sunset 16:22 on 1 November, 09:18 and 15:12 on 21 December, 03:54 and 22:44 on 21 June. A December day has under six hours of sun, so put the outdoor sights (the roof, the fortress, Vigeland) before 15:00 and the museums after.

Where it fits a journey

Oslo is the second half of the Copenhagen or Oslo stopover, and the start of the drive west to the fjords, a full day over the mountains to the western fjords journey. The Oslo stop has the toll ring prices for anyone arriving by car; inside the city, leave the car.
