A canal boat is the hour that shows a first-time visitor how Copenhagen fits together: the harbour, the naval islands of Holmen, the opera house, Christianshavn's canals and the palace island, all from water level. It suits any day of a Copenhagen stay, including a cold one, because both operators on the Nyhavn quay sail covered, heated boats in winter. It costs 80 kr with Netto-Bådene or from DKK 179 with Strömma's Classic Canal Tour, read on their own pages on 1 November 2026. It does not suit someone with a non-folding wheelchair on Strömma's boats, or a day when high water closes the canals.
What the operators say
Netto-Bådene, the low-fare operator, sells at the quay by Heibergsgade: queue, buy, board the next sailing. Adults pay 80 kr and children aged 3–14 pay 40 kr. Its guides speak Danish, English and German, and from October to March it sails covered, heated boats. The route on its page runs from Nyhavn past Holmen, the old naval base, with the 1748 mast crane and the Sixtus battery, and it warns that the route can change in July and August. For 1 November its timetable listed two boats and nine departures from Nyhavn: 10.00, 10.40, 11.20, 12.00, 12.40, 13.20, 14.00, 14.40 and 15.20, with no sailings from the Holmens Kirke stop.
Strömma's Classic Canal Tour leaves from Nyhavn 3 and from Ved Stranden 26 near the palace island. It takes an hour; the Classic Canal Tour & The Harbour takes 1 hour 45 minutes and adds the new Nordhavn district. Fares start at DKK 179, or DKK 157 from Ved Stranden for an online booking at least three days ahead. Adult prices apply from age 16. From 1 October to 3 January, Nyhavn departures are live-guided only; an app carries the audio guide on other departures. In winter it also sells an After Dark departure in the late afternoon.
The arithmetic
An hour on the water, or 105 minutes on the longer Strömma trip. Kongens Nytorv metro is 230 m from Nyhavn 3 on OpenStreetMap footpaths, a 3-minute walk at 80 m a minute, so from a central hotel the boat costs a day about 120 minutes: the sailing, a 15-minute queue at the quay and a buffer. On the Copenhagen or Oslo stopover ledger it fits the morning of day two before the airport metro.
The computed figure is the light. Copenhagen's sunset on 1 November 2026 was 16:31 by the NOAA equations, so Netto-Bådene's 15.20 sailing, the last of the day, came back in daylight; by mid-December sunset is 15:37 and the last daylight boat is an early-afternoon one. Per minute, Netto-Bådene charge 1.3 kr and Strömma's one-hour tour 3.0 kr. The difference buys an online booking, more languages and the longer harbour option.
What goes wrong
High water and closed canals, first: Netto-Bådene say both can change or cancel sailings, because the boats squeeze under the city's low bridges. Queues, second: in summer the quay line can be long, and Netto-Bådene take group reservations only from parties of 15. Rain, third: in late spring and summer Strömma sails open boats and hands out ponchos, with some covered departures daily. Luggage, fourth: there is no room for cases on Strömma's boats.
Alternatives on the same quay
The city's harbour buses are another way onto the water, without a guide; DOT, the capital's public-transport company, lists them as lines 991, 992 and 993 on its bus and harbour-bus timetable pages, but its timetables and single-ticket fares render only with script, so no fare is given here; check on dinoffentligetransport.dk/en/find-tickets/single-tickets or in the DOT app. On foot, the harbour front from Nyhavn to the Inderhavnsbroen bridge and Christianshavn is free. For a view from above instead of below, Rundetårn is an 11-minute walk from Kongens Nytorv. In summer, a swim at the harbour baths shows the same water from inside it.
