Mykines is the westernmost island of the Faroes, a single village and the puffin slopes above it, reached by a small ferry from Sørvágur on Vágar, the airport island. For a route it is a whole day or a night, and it is the most rule-bound place in the islands: between 1 May and 31 August every ferry passenger over 15 pays a fee, DKK 500 or DKK 400 if booked online before arrival, and the fee includes a guide who must accompany you on the island (Visit Faroe Islands, read 1 November 2026).
The guide is not optional and neither is the route: Visit Faroe Islands says the path to the lighthouse is closed after a landslide, with a risk of more, and that other parts of the island remain open. Anyone who planned the walk out to Mykineshólmur from an older guide should plan for less.
The ferry's own site, mykines.fo, describes daily departures from Sørvágur but showed no timetable or fare without script today, so neither is given here. Sørvágur harbour is 2.5 km from Vágar airport and about 48 km, roughly 50 minutes, from Tórshavn by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, through the Vágatunnilin, which tolls cars heading onto Vágar (see the Vágar airport stop).
Practical line: leave the car on Vágar; take food and water, and a plan for a cancelled return sailing. The nearest fuel and café are at Vágar airport.
