Swedish Lapland in summer: the midnight sun and the Kungsleden
Abisko's midnight sun runs 24 May–18 July 2027, computed; the first trail hut and the Nikkaluokta bus open 18 June. The overlap is 31 nights: walk inside it.
Go between 18 June and 18 July. At Abisko the sun stays above the horizon at midnight from the night of 24 May to the night of 18 July 2027, computed with the NOAA equations. The Swedish Tourist Association's Abiskojaure hut, the first on the northern Kungsleden, and the bus from Nikkaluokta to Kiruna both open their summer season on 18 June 2027 and close on 19 September, as their own pages said on 1 November 2026. The two windows overlap for 31 nights. Walk inside that month and you hike under a sun that does not set; walk in August and you get open huts and darker nights; check each further hut's own STF page for its dates.
The light, computed
Nights on which the sun's upper edge stays above the horizon at local solar midnight, refraction included (NOAA equations, 2027, computed 1 November 2026):
| Place | First night | Last night | Nights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abisko | 24 May | 18 July | 56 |
| Kiruna | 27 May | 15 July | 50 |
| Jukkasjärvi | 27 May | 15 July | 50 |
The softer measure is a night that never gets darker than civil twilight, the sun no more than 6° below the horizon. At Abisko that runs from 3 May to 9 August 2027; at Kiruna from 5 May to 7 August. Operators count differently: the Icehotel counts 47 days of midnight sun at Jukkasjärvi, as recorded on the Jukkasjärvi stop; our 50 uses the refraction-corrected sunrise standard.
The trail: Abisko to Nikkaluokta
STF's page for its signature trail, read 1 November 2026, gives the northern section of the Kungsleden from Abisko to Nikkaluokta as 107 km, seven stages that fit into five days, 12 to 21 km and 6 to 8 hours a day. The whole Kungsleden is "just over 450 kilometers" from Abisko to Hemavan, with 16 STF huts 10 to 20 km apart.
| Stage | km | Hours (STF) | Shop at the hut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abisko – Abiskojaure | 15 | 4–6 | yes |
| Abiskojaure – Alesjaure | 21 | 6–8 | yes |
| Alesjaure – Tjäktja | 13 | 4–5 | no |
| Tjäktja – Sälka | 12 | 3–5 | yes |
| Sälka – Singi | 12 | 3–4 | no |
| Singi – Kebnekaise | 15 | 4–5 | mountain station |
| Kebnekaise – Nikkaluokta | 19 | 5–7 | village shop |
Two summer boats each save six kilometres, STF says: across Lake Alesjaure on day two and across Láddjujávri on the last day. The highest point is the Tjäktja pass at 1,150 m, four kilometres out of Tjäktja. Between Singi and Nikkaluokta the route leaves the official Kungsleden. Water comes from streams. Huts without a shop mean carrying food for that night.
Getting to the ends
Abisko has a railway halt about 800 m from the tourist station, and the bus from Kiruna takes about 1 h 15, the national-park page says. By car the E10 is 94 km and about 80 minutes from Kiruna by OSRM. At the other end, Nikkaluoktaexpressen runs to Kiruna in the same 18 June – 19 September window for 2027, and buying on board adds SEK 200 a person, so book online. Kiruna to Nikkaluokta is 70.5 km and about 70 minutes by road (OSRM, computed 1 November 2026). The winter version of the Abisko road and its avalanche closures is in Kiruna to Abisko: train or car.
If not the whole trail
A day out of Abisko is 10 km to the Nissonjåhka camp and back, two hours forty to four hours at STF's pace (/experiences/abisko-national-park-summer-hike). At Jukkasjärvi, Nutti Sámi Siida's open-air museum is open daily all summer and keeps some reindeer there while the herd is in the mountains; adult SEK 275 (/experiences/jukkasjarvi-reindeer-sami). STF also says guided ascents of Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain, leave daily from the mountain station: one extra night on the trail.
Against the winter trip
The Lapland aurora week on this site is the winter shape of the same region, built around dark hours rather than light. In summer the aurora is gone (no dark sky), the huts are open and the walking is the point. For the closest summer road trip on this site, the Norway western fjords week runs in the same months.
