Kiruna to Abisko: train or car, in the dark months
94 km on the E10 or 1 h 45 by train. Abisko has no sunrise from 6 December to 6 January and 2 h 52 of sun on 15 January, computed; blasting shuts both 05:30–07:30.
Train, if Kiruna and Abisko are the whole trip; car, if Abisko is a night on the way from Rovaniemi to Tromsø. The road is 94.1 km and about 1 h 20 at the winter limits (OSRM over OpenStreetMap, 1 November 2026); the train is 1 h 45 on the one published timetable readable today. What decides it is the light and the mountain: on 15 January 2027 Abisko has 2 h 52 min of sun, computed, and between Abisko and Björkliden Trafikverket fires avalanche charges that close the E10 and the railway together, usually between 05:30 and 07:30. A car in January is driven in twilight and after the blasting; a train is somebody else's problem.
Daylight at Abisko, computed
NOAA solar position equations for 68.3495° N, 18.83° E, Swedish time, sunrise and sunset at a zenith of 90.833°.
| 15th of | sunrise | sunset | daylight | with civil twilight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December 2026 | — | — | none | 5 h 14 min |
| January 2027 | 10:29 | 13:20 | 2 h 52 min | 6 h 24 min |
| February 2027 | 08:07 | 15:52 | 7 h 46 min | 9 h 52 min |
The computed no-sunrise window at Abisko runs from 6 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. Civil twilight gives five hours of grey at midwinter, enough for the walk to the canyon and not for the 305 km on to Tromsø.
Train: what is published and what is not
The timetable that could be read is Snälltåget's, for its Arctic night train of 23 November 2026, Malmö and Stockholm to Narvik: Kiruna 13:00, Abisko 14:45, Narvik 16:34 northbound, and Narvik 12:40, Abisko 14:45, Kiruna 16:40 on the 27 November return, marked preliminary "due to track works". That is 1 h 45 between Kiruna and Abisko on a long-distance train. SJ's night-train and Kiruna pages returned 404 or empty today, Vy's Swedish front page had nothing north of Stockholm, and Norrtåg's timetable page lists Luleå–Boden–Kiruna to 12 December with "avvikande tider på grund av banarbete" and no Abisko detail; the daytime Kiruna–Abisko–Narvik trains and their fares are "check on sj.se and vy.se", and no price is printed.
The train buys immunity from the two things below.
Car: the E10's winter notes from Trafikverket
Trafikverket's page on avalanche control near Malmbanan and the E10, last updated 28 June 2022 and read today, says that "Vid Nuoljafjället mellan Abisko och Björkliden uppstår ofta laviner", avalanches often form on Nuolja between Abisko and Björkliden, where road and railway pass under steep rock; that a remotely fired, gas-driven control system runs from December to May; that "Vanlig tid för sprängning är någon gång mellan klockan 5.30 och 7.30", with other times "vid akuta lägen"; and that "Vid sprängning stängs Malmbanan och E10 av för trafik", both are closed for the blasting. If an avalanche blocked the road the detour would be "62 mil", about 620 km. An SMS service announces the blasts; sign up by email to the address on the page.
Weather closes the road on its own. SVT reported on 10 February 2015 that "Både tågtrafiken och väg E10 har stängts av på grund av hårt väder och lavinrisk", trains and the E10 closed between Björkliden and Riksgränsen and on the Norwegian side, the road expected open "tidigast i morgon på eftermiddagen". That is one dated event, not a frequency; Trafikverket's live traffic page is a map application and gave no text today, so the morning's status is a check on trafikinfo.trafikverket.se. Sweden requires winter tyres from 1 December to 31 March when the road is wintry; the Sweden country page has the rule and its source.
The Swedish variation, re-timed
The Lapland ledger's Swedish line is Rovaniemi to Kiruna 340 km, Kiruna to Abisko 94, Abisko to Tromsø 305, 740 km against 600 on the Finnish side. Lay the daylight on it. In December the line does not work: Abisko has no sun and Tromsø's computed day is twilight only. In January, 2 h 52 of sun at Abisko means the 305 km to Tromsø, about four hours plus the border, cannot be driven in daylight; the honest January version is Kiruna to Abisko by train for two nights and no Tromsø leg. In February, 7 h 46 min at Abisko fits Kiruna–Abisko after a late breakfast and Abisko–Tromsø the next day if the car leaves at 08:30, after the blasting window, and reaches the E8 before dusk at 15:52. The ledger's February start is the earliest sane date for the Swedish variation too, with one rule added: do not plan to pass Nuolja before 07:30.
The Iceland line
Reykjavík, the south coast ledger's base, has 5 h 24 min of daylight on 15 January and 8 h 37 min on 15 February (the daylight post on this site). In January that is nearly twice Abisko's sun; in February the two are within an hour. Iceland in January is a short-day driving week on an open coast road; Abisko in January is a train and a mountain station with the car left in Kiruna. Only one is a ledger with kilometres in it.
