Lofoten in winter: the E10, the Bodø ferry and three hours of light
Reine has 3 h 15 min of sun on 15 January 2027, computed, and none from 10 December to 2 January. The Bodø ferry's winter sailings, and a February week against Iceland.
February, not December. On 15 February 2027 Reine has 7 h 52 min between sunrise and sunset, computed with the NOAA solar equations for 67.93° N; on 15 January it has 3 h 15 min, and from 10 December to 2 January the sun does not rise. A February week in Lofoten is a driving week with the light of a short Icelandic one; a December week is twilight around a ferry that arrives in the dark.
Daylight at Reine, computed
NOAA solar position equations for 67.9321° N, 13.0882° E, sunrise and sunset at a zenith of 90.833°, Norwegian clock time. Civil twilight is the sun less than 6° under the horizon.
| 15th of | sunrise | sunset | daylight | with civil twilight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | 09:20 | 14:24 | 5 h 05 min | 7 h 42 min |
| December 2026 | — | — | none | 5 h 26 min |
| January 2027 | 10:40 | 13:54 | 3 h 15 min | 6 h 33 min |
| February 2027 | 08:27 | 16:18 | 7 h 52 min | 9 h 55 min |
The computed no-sunrise window at Reine runs from 10 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. It is not black: five and a half hours of twilight at midwinter is enough for the 9 km to Å and back, not for the islands.
The road
Statens vegvesen's scenic-route page for Lofoten, read 1 November 2026, gives the 230 km route between Raftsundet and Å and calls it a route for any season ("uansett årstid") without stating winter closures; E10 winter closures are storm closures for hours, mostly for wind on the bridges. The E10 Lofoten project page lists the Nappstraumen tunnel as under construction with the aim "å redusere faren for skred, bølger", to reduce the danger of landslides and waves. The vegvesen.no road-message pages and the yr.no traffic feed are map applications and gave no text today; the Vegvesen Trafikk app or the 175 line is the morning check.
Column driving is the rule to read in advance. Statens vegvesen's page "Slik kjører du i kolonne", read today, says: "Forbered deg til turen ved å ha fulladet batteri eller full tank på bilen", a full battery or tank, because there are no fuel or charging stations on convoy stretches; "Ha lykt, slepetau og snøspade lett tilgjengelig", torch, tow rope and shovel to hand; food, warm clothes, hazard lights on; "Hold øyekontakt med bilen foran", keep eye contact with the car in front; "Ikke kjør ut av kolonnen eller forsøk å snu", do not leave the column or try to turn; and if the column stops, "må du ikke bevege deg bort fra bilen", do not leave the car. The plough crews may turn away a vehicle they judge will not keep up.
The ferry
Torghatten Nord runs route 18-782, Bodø–Værøy–Røst–Moskenes; its route page links a winter 2026–2027 timetable PDF "from September 7th" whose text layer is a 2013 summer sheet and could not be read. The sailings below are from the national journey planner, Entur, queried on 1 November 2026 for the weeks of 9 November 2026 and 18 January 2027, which gave the same pattern. Direct crossings take 3 h 15 min; "via" sailings call at Værøy and Røst.
| Bodø to Moskenes | Moskenes to Bodø | |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 16:45 | 08:00, 20:30 |
| Tuesday | 01:00, 05:00 (via, 7 h), 16:45 | 08:00, 12:15, 20:30 |
| Wednesday | 01:45 (via, 4 h 45), 15:15 | 08:00, 19:00 (via, 4 h 30) |
| Thursday | 00:45, 05:00, 16:45 | 08:00, 20:30 |
| Friday | 00:45, 16:45 | 08:00 |
| Saturday | 16:30 | 08:00 |
| Sunday | 13:00, 21:00 | 15:30 |
Entur's data ran out before 15 February, so the February pattern assumes the winter sheet holds. Torghatten's page gives the fares: a car up to six metres 605 kr, a reservation 130 kr on top, booked before 20:00 the day before, with a place in the prepaid queue 45 minutes before sailing; foot passengers without a reservation travel free. The operator recommends the direct sailings because the island calls can leave cars behind.
A February week, against the south coast
Fly to Bodø on a Sunday, take the 13:00 ferry and land at Moskenes at 16:15, three minutes before the computed sunset. Two nights at Reine for Reinebringen's steps if they are not iced and the 9 km to Å. Then north: Reine to Svolvær is 124.8 km and about 2 h 15 by OSRM, Svolvær to Evenes airport 165.8 km and 2 h 45, both inside a 7 h 52 day with stops. Four driving days under 170 km, one ferry, one flight home from Evenes.
The Iceland comparison is the five-day south coast and Golden Circle ledger. Reykjavík on 15 February has 8 h 37 min of daylight (the daylight post on this site), 45 minutes more than Reine, and its longest day is 295 km against Lofoten's 170. Iceland has no ferry, no polar night and no column driving on Route 1; Lofoten has 68° N in February with the sea on both sides of the road. In December and January the comparison fails: Reykjavík keeps four to five hours of sun through midwinter and Reine keeps none.
