Campervan or car plus guesthouse: the break-even bed price for two

At the from-rates read on 1 November 2026 the car wins only if a guesthouse night for two is under about 7,650 ISK; at the stated summer rates the line is about 11,500.

The short answer: on the figures that could be read today, a campervan week for two on the seven-day Ring Road ledger costs about 83,500 ISK in vehicle and campsites at the operator's from-rate, and a small hire car costs about 37,700. The difference, spread over six nights, is 7,643 ISK a night. If you can find a guesthouse room for two at less than that, the car is cheaper; if not, the van is. At the summer day-rates the same two operators state in their FAQs, the line moves to about 11,500 ISK a night. This site keeps beds as a band rather than a number, so the break-even is the number to hold the band against.

The inputs, dated

Campervan: Go Campers' compact-camper page, read 1 November 2026, lists "Go SMART Budget Camper From $52 per day" (manual, no night heater), "Go SMART Camper From $54 per day" (manual, night heater), "Go Iceland Camper From $63 per day" and "Go SMART Automatic Camper From $65 per day". No dates are attached to the from-rates. The same company's planning article says small two-person vans "typically start around $70–$285/day in winter and $117–$540/day at peak summer". The $54 heater model is used below as the from-rate and $117 as the summer rate.

Car: Go Car Rental's home page, read the same day, lists small cars "From $44/day", with SCDW, gravel and theft protection and unlimited mileage included; its FAQ gives small cars at "$30–50/day in winter" and "$80–120/day in summer". $44 is used as the from-rate and $80 as the summer rate.

Both are US-dollar figures. Converted at Landsbankinn's rate board read on 1 November 2026, USD selling at 122.36 ISK (the board carries a 15-minute delay and no date stamp). The other campervan and car sites tried today (Kuku, Happy Campers, Blue Car Rental, Lotus, Hölduborg) showed no rate without a booking form, so they are not in the sum.

Campsites: the six-night figure from the camping post on this site, 37,300 ISK for two with electricity, built from each site's own page the same day.

Fuel: the ledger's 1,555 km at 7.5 l/100 km and 284.20 ISK a litre, 33,100 ISK, from the fuel post. It is the car's figure. Neither operator publishes a consumption figure for the van, so the van's fuel is left as "more than 33,100" rather than invented; everything below is before fuel on both sides, which flatters the van.

The arithmetic

From-rates. Van: $54 × 7 = $378 = 46,250 ISK; plus campsites 37,300 = 83,550. Car: $44 × 7 = $308 = 37,690. Break-even bed = (83,550 − 37,690) ÷ 6 nights = 7,643 ISK a night for two.

Summer rates. Van: $117 × 7 = $819 = 100,210; plus campsites 37,300 = 137,510. Car: $80 × 7 = $560 = 68,520. Break-even = (137,510 − 68,520) ÷ 6 = 11,498 a night. At the top of the car FAQ range, $120 a day, the car week is 102,780 and the break-even falls to 5,788.

What it means

A guesthouse double for two under 7,650 ISK a night in June does not exist in the mid band this site uses for the Ring Road week, and probably not in the budget band either; hostel dormitory beds are the only thing that gets near it, and two of those are not a room. So on the from-rates the van is cheaper, by the amount the beds cost minus 7,643 a night. On the summer rates the question is whether a bed for two is under 11,500 ISK, which is still below where the budget band sits in June. The honest reading is that the van wins on cost in summer unless the car rate stays at its from-rate while the van's does not, which is the $120 row, where the gap is only 5,800 a night and a cheap guesthouse can close it.

What the sum leaves out, on purpose: the van's fuel, which is higher; the car's parking at guesthouses, which is free; the van's campsite rule, which the camping post sets out (no overnighting outside a campsite without the landowner's permission); and the difference in what a week feels like, which is not a cost. Nothing here is a quote for a date. The rates are the ones two operators published on 1 November 2026, and the next re-check will replace them.
