Camping in Iceland: 24 dated prices, the rule, and a week for two
Adult per night from 1,300 ISK (Grundarfjörður) to 3,500 (Hellishólar), read on each site's page on 1 November 2026. Six Ring Road nights for two: about 29,500 ISK.
The short answer: two adults in a tent pay between 2,600 and 7,400 ISK a night at the sites below, most often about 4,800 once the 400 ISK per-unit overnight tax is added. On the seven-day Ring Road ledger the six nights come to 29,500 ISK for two without electricity and 37,300 with it, using the nearest campsite that published a price today. That is the cheapest bed the site can put a number on.
The law on sleeping outside a campsite
Umhverfisstofnun's English page, citing Act No. 60/2013 on Nature Conservation, read 1 November 2026: it is "illegal to spend the night in tent trailers, tent campers, caravans, camper vans or similar outside organised campsites" unless the landowner or rightholder has given permission. A traditional tent may be pitched "for one night on uncultivated land" along public routes in inhabited areas if there is no campsite nearby and the landowner has not restricted access "by means of signs on gates and walking paths"; permission is needed near homes or farms, for more than one night, for more than three tents, or on cultivated land. The page also lists protected areas with stricter rules, Vatnajökull National Park among them: "Tents and vehicles must use organised campsites". For a campervan the campsite is not a choice, and the table is the cost of the law.
The table, read 1 November 2026

Not readable today, so no figure: Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Mývatn, Húsavík, Seyðisfjörður, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skógar, Hella, Selfoss, Landmannalaugar (the hut association's page prices the hut, not the camping) and Ísafjörður's Tungudalur (dates only). Check on those sites.
The camping card: utilegukortid.is, read today, covers two adults and up to four children under 16 with one tent or caravan, 28 nights, from the campsites' opening until 15 September; no price was shown on the page, so there is no computation.
Six nights for two, computed
The seven-day Ring Road ledger sleeps at Vík, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Mývatn, Akureyri and Borgarnes. Where the town's own site published no price today the nearest site in the table is used and named. Formula per night: 2 × adult + tax; electricity added in the second column.
| Night | site used | tent, two adults | with electricity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Vík | Vík | 4,800 | 6,000 |
| 2 Höfn | Stafafell í Lóni (30 km east) | 4,400 | 5,400 |
| 3 Egilsstaðir | CampEast Reyðarfjörður (35 km off) | 4,800 | 6,000 |
| 4 Mývatn | Ásbyrgi NP (off the Dettifoss road) | 5,600 | 7,100 |
| 5 Akureyri | Hamrar (2025 list) | 5,500 | 7,000 |
| 6 Borgarnes | Varmaland (20 km north) | 4,400 | 5,800 |
| total | 29,500 | 37,300 |
One caution: the Mývatn and Höfn substitutes are not where the ledger sleeps, so the figure is a floor built from pages that could be read, not a quote. The Reykjavík row shows how different a city site is: 7,105 ISK for two in a tent, a night and a half anywhere else in the table.
