Gásadalur is the end of the road on Vágar, and that is its value on a route: the airport is on the same island, so it is the natural first or last stop of a Faroese leg, done with the luggage in the boot rather than as a day trip from Tórshavn. From the terminal you drive west through Sørvágur and Bøur and into the single-lane tunnel that replaced the old mail-carrier's mountain path; the village of a dozen or so houses and the Múlafossur waterfall lie at the far mouth.
Plan it as a half-hour stop that can stretch to an hour and a half if the light is doing something. The viewpoint is a short walk from the parking area along a grass track; the edge is unfenced, and the wind that makes the waterfall blow uphill makes the edge dangerous. There is no fuel and no shop in Gásadalur; the last of both is back in Sørvágur, which is also where the Mykines boat (SSL route 36) leaves, so the two combine well on one morning.
Quiet is before the first flight's hire cars arrive and after the tour minibuses leave in the late afternoon. In winter, treat the tunnel approach road as a mountain road: Landsverk's webcams and driving-conditions page cover Vágar, and the island is the first place a westerly hits.
What could not be confirmed today: the year the tunnel opened, whether the village now charges for parking, and the exact walking distance. Those figures stay out until an official page gives them.
