Hveravellir is the halfway house on the Kjölur crossing and the only staffed place on it. The operator's page, read today, puts it on "Kjölur route (number F35)" which "runs approximately 200 km across the middle highlands" roughly midway between Reykjavík and Akureyri; the Road Administration now signs the road as 35 without the F, having dropped the F designation after upgrades, but it is still a long gravel road closed in winter.

On a route plan it is either the lunch and bathe stop on a one-day Gullfoss-to-Blönduós crossing, about three hours in from Gullfoss, or the overnight that splits it. The hot pool is the reason to stop; the boardwalk round the springs takes half an hour.

The practical line, from the 2026 price list on hveravellir.is today: a "short-stop service fee" of 500 ISK per person "includes toilets pool and showers"; the old hut dormitory with sleeping bag is 10,900 ISK per person, bed linen 2,400, and a private room in the new hut 36,900 ISK for up to three. No camping price and no season dates were on the page; no fuel is sold here, and none exists on the whole crossing, so fill at Gullfoss or Blönduós and carry the reserve a 200 km gravel road at low speed demands. Phone signal is intermittent.

Opening, from the Vegagerðin table read today: Kjalvegur Gullfoss to Hveravellir opened between 30 May and 14 June over 2021–2025, the northern half between 1 and 14 June. Before that it is closed to all traffic. Quiet almost always; the Kjölur buses stop here mid-afternoon in July.
