The longest stretch without fuel on each Iceland ledger

The longest stretch without fuel on each Iceland ledger

From the ledger legs and the one station list readable on 1 November 2026 (olis.is; n1.is and orkan.is were not): 365 km between confirmed pumps on the 7-day loop.

The longest stretch between fuel stations this site can vouch for on the 7-day Ring Road is 365 km, from Fellabær at Egilsstaðir to Akureyri the way the ledger drives it, with the Stuðlagil and Dettifoss detours and the Mývatn lake loop. In practice it is 248 km, because Reykjahlíð sells fuel; but on 1 November 2026 the only station list that answered a plain page request was Olís's, and Reykjahlíð is not on it. That is the shape of every figure below: a "confirmed" gap between stations on olis.is, and a "practical" gap once the stops' notes about fuel being present but unbranded are counted. N1's station page returned HTTP 403 and Orkan's an empty page on the day, as the stop pages recorded earlier, so their stations cannot be placed by this site and are not. All distances are OSRM over OpenStreetMap, computed the same day, forced along Route 1 by the coast in the east.

The towns whose fuel is present but whose operator the stop pages could not confirm on a station map on 1 November 2026: Hvolsvöllur, Freysnes, Djúpivogur, Seyðisfjörður, Reykjahlíð, Ásbyrgi, Hvammstangi village, Ólafsvík, Patreksfjörður, Þingeyri, Möðrudalur, Flúðir and Geysir. Staðarskáli, the Hrútafjörður roadhouse every northbound car stops at, is not on the Olís list either; the stop page says it sells fuel and this site believes it, but the table does not.

How the legs were cut

Each gap is the sum of OSRM legs between the two stations, plus whatever the ledger adds between them. Fellabær to Reykjahlíð is 162.5 km on Route 1; the 7-day ledger's Day 4 is 250 km against the 165 of the straight road, so the detours add 85, and Day 5 counts the 36 km lake loop before Goðafoss and Akureyri; 162.5 + 85 + 36 + 83.5 is 367, rounded to 365 in the table because the detour figure is the ledger's own rounding. Höfn to Reyðarfjörður is 224.9 km with a waypoint at Breiðdalsvík, because OSRM otherwise takes the Öxi pass and the ledger does not. Klaustur to Höfn is 188.1 km, of which Freysnes, a few minutes east of Skaftafell, is at 72. The 5-day ledger's Day 4 is 330 km from Vík; take off the 73 km Vík–Klaustur leg and the 2 km canyon spur and the out-and-back from the Klaustur pumps is about 255. The Kjölur figure is Hella to Gullfoss (83 km) plus Gullfoss to Blönduós by Hveravellir (200 km), the last at gravel speed.

What the figures mean for a tank

A small rental car with a 40-litre tank at the ledgers' assumed 7.5 l/100 km has about 530 km in it from full; a camper at 10 l/100 km has 400. Neither is troubled by any practical gap on this list. Every confirmed gap is also inside both ranges, from full. The arithmetic only bites when the tank is not full at the start of the gap, which is the usual case: a car that leaves Egilsstaðir at half on Day 4 of the 7-day loop has 265 km, and the confirmed gap is 365. That is the whole reason the ledger notes say "fuel before leaving Egilsstaðir" and "fill at Kirkjubæjarklaustur" rather than "fuel is available": the sentence is about the needle, not the map.

The other thing the table shows is where unbranded fuel carries the plan. Reykjahlíð cuts the longest gap on three ledgers by more than 100 km; Freysnes halves the south-coast gap; Patreksfjörður halves the Westfjords one. These are real pumps that take cards at all hours; what this site could not do on 1 November 2026 was read the page that says who runs them. When n1.is and orkan.is answer again, the stop pages will be re-checked and this table will shrink. Until then, the rule is the one the ledgers already use: fill at the last confirmed station before a gap, and treat the unbranded town as the margin, not the plan.
