Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls: days, huts and buses, priced for 2027

FÍ's 55 km Laugavegur and 25 km Fimmvörðuháls recomputed at 4 km/h plus a climb allowance, with the 2027 hut price list, Trex's 2027 fares and the F-road record.

Five days, 80 km, and about 104,000 ISK a head for huts and buses at the 2027 prices, 122,000 with a hut night at Landmannalaugar before the start. That is Laugavegur in the four stages Ferðafélag Íslands (FÍ) lays out, Fimmvörðuháls as a fifth day over to Skógar, hut beds at 18,000 ISK a night and the Trex bus from Reykjavík at 15,900 ISK each way. Camp instead and the beds fall to 3,600 ISK. The arithmetic is for the window the road authority's record says is open: late June to mid-September, not a week earlier.

The stages, FÍ's hours and a formula

FÍ's Laugavegur page (fi.is, read 1 November 2026) gives four stages, in the table below with its hours and climbs; the page header says 54 km and the text says 55, and the stages add to 55. The Fimmvörðuháls page gives 25 km in two stages, Skógar to Baldvinsskáli with 1,000 m of ascent and Baldvinsskáli to Þórsmörk; the Þórsmörk page calls the whole crossing 8–12 hours.

The hut pages give the heights: Landmannalaugar 550 m, Hrafntinnusker 1,100 m, Álftavatn 550 m, Hvanngil 550 m, Emstrur 465 m, Langidalur in Þórsmörk 200 m, Baldvinsskáli 900 m (550 to 1,100 is 550 m of climb; the stage page says 470). The formula: hours = km ÷ 4 + metres of ascent ÷ 600, descent not charged, no stops.

The formula says Laugavegur is 14 h 32 min of walking and could be done in three days (stages 1–2 in 6 h 47 min, 3–4 in 7 h 45 min). FÍ says 20–24 hours and books the huts for four. The gap is the ground: river crossings and sand on the two long stages, snow on the Hrafntinnusker plateau into early summer, and the weather on the 1,100 m stage. Treat the formula as the floor and FÍ's range as the plan. Fimmvörðuháls comes out at 7 h 55 min against FÍ's 8–12, and on 1 November 2026 the Baldvinsskáli page carried a warning not to cross the pass in the present conditions.

The huts and what they cost in 2027

FÍ's Price List 2027, valid for accommodation from 1 May 2027 to 30 April 2028 (fi.is terms and prices, read 1 November 2026): a hut night is 18,000 ISK at Landmannalaugar, Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Hvanngil, Emstrur, Þórsmörk/Langidalur and Baldvinsskáli; camping at the same places 3,600 ISK; facility fee 700 ISK; shower 1,100 ISK. The list prices a bed, as the booking system does. Capacities from the hut pages: Landmannalaugar 78, Hrafntinnusker 52, Álftavatn 72, Hvanngil 60, Emstrur 60, Langidalur 73, Baldvinsskáli 16. Huts are booked north to south only, with no refund for weather and a full refund only if the road to Landmannalaugar is closed.

For one person: three hut nights on the trail (Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Emstrur) 54,000 ISK; add Langidalur for a Fimmvörðuháls day and it is 72,000; add the night before at Landmannalaugar and it is 90,000. The same three nights in a tent are 10,800 ISK, showers extra. The hut pages still showed "Hut: 17,000 kr." on the same day, which looks like the 2026 figure; the 2027 list is the one dated.

The buses

Trex's 2027 pages (trex.is, read 1 November 2026): Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar 15,900 ISK one way, 31,800 return, Bus 1 from City Hall at 07:30 arriving 11:20 from 18 June to 3 September, Bus 2 at 12:30 from 25 June to 22 August; Reykjavík to Þórsmörk 15,900 and 31,800, from Hella or Hvolsvöllur 14,900 and 29,800, Bus 1 leaving Langidalur at 14:30 to reach City Hall at 18:15 from 20 June to 5 September. Children 6–15 get 20 per cent off one-way fares. The through-walk is two one-way tickets, 31,800 ISK. Reykjavík Excursions' Highland Bus (icelandia.com) showed "from €81" to Landmannalaugar and "from €77" to Þórsmörk against a 2026 timetable, minimum age 6; no ISK fare and no 2027 dates were published on 1 November 2026. The Trex Skógar page carried no fare that day; check it before planning the Fimmvörðuháls exit.

So the five-day plan at hut prices is 72,000 + 15,900 + 15,900 = 103,800 ISK, or 121,800 with the Landmannalaugar night; camping brings it to about 46,000.

When the road is actually open

Vegagerðin's opening table for 2021–2025 (read 1 November 2026): F208 from Sigalda to Landmannalaugar opened earliest on 23 May (2025), latest on 23 June (2022), on average 2 June; F208 south towards Eldgjá 16 June to 6 July, average 25 June; F261 into Emstrur 23 June to 15 July, average 5 July; F210 Keldur–Hvanngil 23 June to 15 July. F249 into Þórsmörk is not on the page; Vegagerðin's distance tool gives Hvolsvöllur to Básar as 51 km, 26 of them gravel and 9.4 of them F249, "not passable for passenger cars". FÍ says the trail is open on average from 25 June to 15 September and the trail huts from 25 June to 16–18 September; Langidalur from early May. Landmannalaugar requires a parking reservation for cars arriving 09:00–16:00 from 20 June to 13 September, with a service fee the FÍ page does not quantify.
