Lapland in winter: what to do in Rovaniemi, Jukkasjärvi and Abisko

Husky rides, the Icehotel, the Aurora Sky Station and the Arctic Circle line, with the drives between three bases and their computed sun, December to March.

Pick the base by the month and the activity, because the three are a day's drive apart. Rovaniemi is for husky rides, Santa Claus Village and a sun that never quite disappears (2 h 26 min on 15 December, computed). Jukkasjärvi is for the Icehotel, whose winter exhibition hours start on 12 December 2026. Abisko is for the Aurora Sky Station, whose dinner season runs 1 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. Rovaniemi to Kiruna is 340 km and about 4 h 40 by OSRM, so doing all three is a week, not a weekend.

The matrix: drives and sun

Drives by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, computed 1 November 2026. OSRM uses summer speed limits; Finland lowers many 100 km/h roads to 80 in winter, so add a fifth on the Finnish legs.

Reykjavík on the same dates has 4 h 13 min, 5 h 24 min, 8 h 38 min and 11 h 40 min. By February the four places are within an hour of each other; in December only Rovaniemi and Reykjavík have a sunrise.

Rovaniemi

Visit Rovaniemi's activity listings, read 1 November 2026, include a small-group self-driven husky experience from €189 and, for the Christmas and New Year season, an 8 km husky ride at Korvalan Kestikievari at €140 per adult and €70 per child, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 14:00, "when there's enough snow". A 14:00 start on 15 December finishes after the computed 13:26 sunset, so it runs in twilight. This site's page for it is Rovaniemi husky ride.

Santa Claus Village says it is open every day of the year, that you can meet Santa there every day, and that the Arctic Circle line is marked in its central square; it printed no hours or prices on the page read today. It is 9 km and ten minutes from the centre by OSRM.

Arktikum, the museum of the north in town, lists adult tickets at €22, children 7–17 €10 and a 2+2 family ticket at €54; its printed hours run only from 1 March to 30 November (Tuesday to Sunday 10–18, Mondays closed), so the December to February hours are a check item on arktikum.fi.

Jukkasjärvi and the Icehotel

Icehotel's tickets page, read 1 November 2026: day visits from 13 April 2026 to December 2026 at SEK 325 adult, 225 student or senior, 39 for children 4–12, under 4 free; the site is cash-free. The art exhibition is open 11:00–18:00 to 11 December 2026 (ICEHOTEL 365 only), then 10:00–18:00 from 12 December 2026 to 10 April 2027. The Icebar keeps 11:00–20:00 from 1 December 2026 to 28 March 2027. Winter-season day-visit prices were not printed yet. It is 22 minutes from Kiruna. See Icehotel, Jukkasjärvi.

Abisko and the Aurora Sky Station

The Aurora Sky Station's Northern Light Dinner runs 1 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, from 17:30 to "no later than 01:00". The chairlift page says the lift "kan komma att stängas på grund av rådande väder", may close because of the weather, and that tickets are sold at the valley station or online; neither page printed a price today, and the night-visit page returned a 404. Prices: check with Abisko Turiststation on +46 10 190 2360. See Abisko Aurora Sky Station.

Abisko is 1 h 20 from Kiruna by road, and the railway runs alongside. This site's Kiruna to Abisko post weighs the two in the dark months, including the avalanche blasting that can close both at once.

A week that uses all three

The Lapland aurora week on this site runs Rovaniemi, Levi, Kilpisjärvi and Tromsø, 600 km in February. The Swedish variant swaps Kilpisjärvi for Kiruna and Abisko: Rovaniemi two nights (husky, Santa Claus Village), Kiruna two nights (Icehotel), Abisko two nights (Sky Station), then 305 km to Tromsø to fly home. The longest drive is 4 h 42 and February gives just under eight hours of sun to drive it in. One-way hires across a border are limited; the ledger's FAQ covers it.

The Iceland decision

Lapland in winter is an activity holiday in snow: dogs, reindeer, an ice hotel, a sky station built for the lights. Iceland in winter is a driving holiday in wind: waterfalls, black beaches and glacier ice caves. If the aurora is the point, both work from late autumn to March and both depend on cloud more than latitude. If the children want snow and huskies, Lapland. If you want to drive a different landscape every day, the five-day south coast and Golden Circle is the equivalent week, with more sun in December and January than any of the three Lapland bases.
