Iceland in summer: the windows that open, and the light that stays
Puffins, highland roads, boats, caves and late lagoons, each with the dates its operator or agency prints, plus midnight-sun daylight and summer temperatures, computed.
Summer is when all of Iceland is open. The highland roads usually open by mid-July. Puffins are on the cliffs from late April to mid-August. Boats sail on Jökulsárlón and to the puffin islands, and in the north the sun barely sets. Late June and July are the weeks when every window in the calendar below is open at once. They are also the warmest, with Reykjavík's July mean at 11.6 °C (1991–2020, computed from Veðurstofa's station values). Every Ring Road ledger on this site is written for them. The price is crowds and booked-out beds, and a few highland roads that may still be shut in the first half of June.

Read the last row with care. The highland roads do not open on a date; they open when Vegagerðin judges them passable. The Highlands 4x4 ledger starts on 10 July, the right side of the line for every road it uses in all five years on record.
The light, and the warmth
Daylight on 15 June and 15 July 2027, NOAA solar equations, computed; temperature and sunshine are 1991–2020 means computed from Veðurstofa Íslands' monthly values for station 1 (Reykjavík) and station 422 (Akureyri).
| Reykjavík | Akureyri | Egilsstaðir | Ísafjörður | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daylight, 15 June | 21 h 02 | 23 h 02 | 22 h 14 | no sunset (12 June–1 July) |
| Daylight, 15 July | 19 h 45 | 20 h 44 | 20 h 26 | 21 h 04 |
| Mean temperature, June / July / August | 9.8 / 11.6 / 11.0 °C | 9.6 / 11.2 / 10.8 °C | — | — |
| Mean sunshine, June / July | 189 / 183 h | 190 / 152 h | — | — |
| Mean rainfall, June / July | 43 / 50 mm | 21 / 34 mm | — | — |
Ísafjörður lies south of the Arctic Circle, but with refraction the NOAA formula keeps the top of the sun above a flat horizon all night for three weeks around the solstice. The town is under mountains, so what you see is a long twilight. In Reykjavík the sun sets at 23:59 on 15 June and rises at 02:57. Dark enough for the northern lights does not return until late August.
The warmth is modest: a July mean of 11.6 °C in the capital and 11.2 in Akureyri. Akureyri is drier, with less than half Reykjavík's June rain.
How summer changes the plan
Every ledger works. The 7-day and 10-day Ring Road ledgers default to a 15 June start. The Westfjords loop to 1 July, when Látrabjarg's birds are on the cliff. The North ledger to 20 June. The light no longer limits the day; your energy does. The longest Ring Road day, 325 km, needs 7 h 34 min of light by this site's daylight rule; Reykjavík has 21 h 02 min on 15 June.
Book what sells out. Elding's puffin boats have up to five departures a day from mid-June, and Jökulsárlón's amphibians at least every 30 minutes from June to August. The operator's page still recommends booking ahead in summer. Landmannalaugar's car park needs a reserved slot for daytime arrivals.
Use the late light. The Forest Lagoon is open to midnight. Vök is open 10:00–23:00 in summer. A waterfall at 22:00 in June is lit as well as at noon and has a fraction of the visitors.
Questions
When is the best time to visit Iceland in summer?
Late June to mid-July, if you want everything open: puffins, all the highland roads (all 14 sections open by 15 July in each of 2021–2025), the Jökulsárlón boats and the longest days. Early June is quieter, but some highland roads may still be shut.
Does it get dark in Iceland in summer?
Not properly from mid-May to early August. Reykjavík has 21 h 02 min of daylight on 15 June, and the rest of the night is bright twilight. Bring an eye mask.
How warm is Iceland in summer?
Mild: Reykjavík's July mean is 11.6 °C and its mean daily maximum 14.9 °C (1991–2020, computed from Veðurstofa's values). Pack layers and a waterproof whatever the forecast.
