The grocery basket index: 25 items priced on kronan.is today

Twenty-five everyday items, all own-label, all priced on pages Krónan publishes without a login, come to 16,596 ISK on 1 November 2026. That total is the index base: 100.0 today, and every re-check divides the new total by 165.96. The basket is Krónan only, and not by choice. Nettó's website lists stores and opening hours and sends shoppers to the Samkaup app for prices; its offer leaflet is an image viewer that returned a 503 today. Bónus publishes no product prices online; its only web shop sells caps and hoodies. One of the three big chains prints prices on the open web, and the index is that one.

#The basket

Prices as printed on kronan.is/odyrt and kronan.is/frysting-voruverds, read 1 November 2026. "Ódýrt" is Krónan's own budget label; "First Price" is an own label it carries. The freeze page says these prices will not rise from 24 September to 31 December 2026.

Average 664 ISK a line. The three protein lines (7, 8, 11) are 5,574, a third of the basket; the chicken breasts are on a dated sale and will move the index by 4 per cent on their own when the list price returns. Two more prices were read today but kept out because the pack size was not printed: Arna plain skyr 549 and a 1 kg tub of Mmm Greek yoghurt 1,150.

What the basket lacks is milk, eggs, butter and bananas. Krónan's site search is rendered in the browser and returned no product links to a plain fetch, and the public API at api.kronan.is answers every request without an account token with a 401. A re-check that can read the search results should swap in the four staples and restate the base.

#Where the shops are, by sleep town

Krónan's store page lists 26 shops, 18 in the capital area and eight in Akranes, Akureyri, Hvolsvöllur, Reyðarfjörður, Selfoss, Vestmannaeyjar, Vík and Þorlákshöfn. Nettó's lists, with daily hours, Höfn 08:00–20:00, Egilsstaðir 08:00–20:00, Akureyri (Glerártorg 09:00–20:00, Hrísalundur 09:00–21:00), Borgarnes 09:00–20:00, Selfoss (two, one to 23:59), Ísafjörður 10:00–20:00 and Húsavík 10:00–19:00, plus the capital area, Keflavík and Njarðvík. Bónus's store page loaded as a map with no town names, so it is not placed here.

The towns with "no, no" are not shopless; Samkaup runs smaller Kjörbúðin and Krambúðin formats in several of them, not checked town by town today. The practical reading is the one the ledgers already make: fill the boot in Selfoss or Hvolsvöllur before Vík, in Höfn before the East, in Akureyri before the Westfjords or the highlands, and expect the basket to cost more than 16,596 anywhere the index cannot be read.
