Helsingør is the town at the narrowest point of the Øresund, and on a route it does two jobs. It is the day trip from Copenhagen to Kronborg Castle, Hamlet's Elsinore, and it is the short-sea crossing to Sweden: the ferry to Helsingborg leaves every 20 minutes and takes about as long, a car ticket from 199 kr booked ahead on the operator's site, read 1 November 2026. For a driver heading north into Sweden it is the alternative to the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen.
The practical line: the railway station and the ferry terminal stand next to each other at the harbour, and Kronborg is a walk north along the water, about 10 minutes by the castle's own figure. By car from Copenhagen it is 47.1 km and 45 minutes on the E47 by OSRM, computed 1 November 2026; public parking for the castle is at Nordhavnsvej and fills around midday in summer, the castle says. The old town behind the harbour, Stengade and the streets around the cathedral, is the place for a meal between the castle and the train.
When it is quiet: a weekday morning, before 10:30, out of the school holidays. In winter, plan around Mondays, when the castle is shut. Louisiana in Humlebæk is 10 minutes south by train, which makes the pair a full day out of Copenhagen; see the Humlebæk stop.
