Things to do in Reykjavík, measured in minutes on foot from Harpa

Fifteen things to do in Reykjavík with the walk from Harpa's door in metres and minutes, the adult price and the hours, all read or computed on 1 November 2026.

Reykjavík is a small city, and most of what a visitor does in it lies within 25 minutes' walk of Harpa, the concert hall on the harbour. Three things belong at the top of any list: a geothermal pool, a volcano show and the harbour itself. The rest is museums, the church on the hill and a few rides on the Grandi peninsula. Below, everything is placed on one walking radius from Harpa's main door. Distances are OSRM foot routes over OpenStreetMap, computed on 1 November 2026, and minutes are at 80 metres a minute, an unhurried pace. Prices and hours were read on each venue's own page the same day.

Three to start with

1. A municipal pool. This is the most Icelandic hour you can spend in the city, and the cheapest. A single adult entry is 1,500 ISK, ages 10–17 pay 400 and under-10s with an adult swim free (reykjavik.is, price list in force from 5 May 2026). Sundhöllin, 20 minutes' walk from Harpa, opens 06:30–22:00 on weekdays. On Tuesdays it closes from 10:00 to 12:00, and at weekends it opens at 08:00. Shower without a swimsuit before you get in; the attendants do check. The pool morning page covers the rules.

2. Volcano Express, Harpa level K2. This is a motion-seat cinematic flight over Reykjanes, Esja, Hengill, Bláfjöll and Keilir. Heat, cold, turbulence and freefall effects run under real eruption footage from 2021–2024. Before the ride there is an interactive pre-show with a live eruption feed, short films, a story map of 247 recorded eruptions and a 48-hour earthquake monitor. The ride is about 10 minutes and the pre-show about 30, so allow 15–45 minutes in all. It runs daily 10:00–20:00 with a show every 15 minutes, and is closed on 25 December. Adults pay 3,990 ISK and children aged 4–12 pay 2,990, with no booking fee, on tix.is or at the Harpa desk. The minimum age is 4 and the minimum height 100 cm (volcanoexpress.is, read 1 November 2026).

3. The Old Harbour by boat. Elding's Classic whale-watching tour leaves Ægisgarður, 10 minutes' walk from Harpa. It costs 14,500 ISK for adults and 7,250 for ages 7–15, and is free under 7. Today's schedule listed 09:00 and 13:00 departures. Elding's 2024 review gives humpbacks on 77 per cent of its tours; the sighting-rate post explains what that figure counts.

Volcano Express needs no walking figure, being inside Harpa itself. Two operators give their own walking figures. The Lava Show's FAQ says about 22 minutes from the city centre, which fits the 24 here. Perlan's visit page says about 30 minutes from the centre, against 45 here from Harpa. The difference is the start point and the pace: Perlan sits on Öskjuhlíð, the city's highest hill, and the route climbs. Buses 13 and 18 stop closest to it, and parking at the door is free.

How the radius plans a day

The first ring, ten minutes, holds the harbour, Hafnarhús, Sun Voyager, the Settlement Exhibition and Volcano Express. That is a morning that never needs a coat for more than ten minutes at a time. The second ring, 16 to 25 minutes, holds the church, two pools, the National Museum and the Grandi rides. The Lava Show and FlyOver are 500 metres apart on Fiskislóð, so they pair naturally. Beyond 35 minutes are Laugardalslaug, Perlan and the zoo, which suit the bus.

A single adult bus fare is 690 ISK; ages 12–17 pay 345, under-12s ride free, and fare capping stops an adult paying for more than three rides a day (klappid.is, read 1 November 2026).

The Reykjavík City Card costs 6,100 ISK for 24 hours, 8,500 for 48 and 10,500 for 72 (visitreykjavik.is, read 1 November 2026). It covers 17 museums and attractions, including the National Museum and the zoo, eight pools, the city buses (but not route 55 to the airport) and the Viðey ferry. One full day of National Museum (3,300), a pool (1,500) and the zoo (2,800) comes to 7,600 ISK at single prices. That is 1,500 more than the 24-hour card, so the card pays on a museum-and-pool day. It does not pay on a day built around Volcano Express, the Lava Show or a whale boat, which charge separately.

Where this fits a journey

The South Coast and Golden Circle ledger sleeps its first two nights in Reykjavík. The afternoon of Day 1, after a 40-minute drive from the airport, is the natural slot for the first ring. The 10-day ledger has its Reykjavík evening on Day 9. The ferry journey reaches the city only on the evening of Day 8, when of everything in the table only the pools are still open after 21:00.

Questions

What can I do in Reykjavík in the evening?

The municipal pools are open to 22:00 every day. Volcano Express runs to 20:00 and Perlan's exhibitions to 21:00. The northern lights boats sail from the Old Harbour in season; Special Tours' boat leaves at 21:00 from September to February, from 12,490 ISK (specialtours.is, read 1 November 2026).

Is Volcano Express suitable for children?

From age 4 and 100 cm tall. Children aged 4–12 pay 2,990 ISK and must be with an adult. The pre-show area is open to all ages, so a younger sibling can wait there. Static front seats are available, and the venue is fully wheelchair accessible.

Do I need a car in Reykjavík?

No. Everything in the table is a walk or a bus ride; parking in the inner zone costs 660 ISK an hour (reykjavik.is, read 1 November 2026). Hire the car on the day you leave town.
