Faroe tunnel tolls in one table, and how to pay them

Tunnil's prices read 1 November 2026: 175 kr for the Eysturoy and Sandoy tunnels, 50 kr for Vágar and Norðoyar, charged one way. Six days to pay online, not three.

The three Faroese road days in the twelve-day ferry ledger cost 450 kr in tunnel tolls if the car is yours and you pay Tunnil online, and 550 kr if it is a hire car billed at the rental rates on tunnil.fo. Both figures are from the operator's price pages read on 1 November 2026. You have six days to pay online, not the three that this site's stop pages and the tourist board have been saying; after six days an invoice goes to the registered owner with 50 kr added.

The table

Tunnil operates the four sub-sea tunnels. Prices are per one-way trip for a car, in Faroese kroner (at par with Danish), from tunnil.fo/gjaldingar/prisir and the English summary page, both read 1 November 2026. "Hald" is the annual subscription, 200 kr a year, valid in all four tunnels.

Vágatunnilin50 kr10 kronly driving out of Vágar; covers the return

Motorcycles pay 160 kr in the Eysturoy and Sandoy tunnels and nothing in the other two. The Faroese payment page puts the direction rule in one sentence: "Gjald verður bert kravt, tá koyrt verður úr Vágum gjøgnum Vágatunnilin og úr Klaksvík gjøgnum Norðoyatunnilin", payment is only demanded when driving out of Vágar and out of Klaksvík. The English page says the same the other way round: "You are charged for both ways when driving from Vágar." So the airport run into Tórshavn is free and the run back to the airport costs 50 kr, and a day in Klaksvík costs 50 kr on the way home.

How to pay

There are no booths. The plate is photographed and three routes exist, all on tunnil.fo. A single trip can be paid online before or after driving through, with a receipt by email. For a short stay, "automatic payment" registers the plate and a card for a set period, and the card details are deleted a month after the period ends. For stays of ten days or more, or for residents, the subscription at 200 kr a year gives the discounted column above.

The deadline is the correction this post exists to make. The English page says payment is due "no later than 6 days" after the trip, after which an invoice is sent with "an additional fee of DKK 50,-"; the Faroese page says an extra charge is added to unpaid bills after a week, "eftir einari viku". Visit Faroe Islands and, until today, the Tórshavn and Klaksvík stop pages on this site said three days. Six is what the operator prints. Pay the same evening anyway.

Hire cars are different. Tunnil's page says a Faroese rental car pays the rental company, not Tunnil, and cannot hold a subscription; it lists the rates it charges rental firms as 100 kr per return trip for the Vágar and Norðoyar tunnels and 175 kr one way for the Eysturoy and Sandoy tunnels, and warns that "some rental companies may charge another price". Ask the desk what is added on top.

What the ledger's three days cost

Day 3 of the ferry ledger goes to Vágar and back: 50 kr, charged leaving Vágar. Day 4, Saksun and Vestmanna, stays on Streymoy and meets no sub-sea tunnel: 0 kr. Day 5 goes to Klaksvík and back: the Eysturoyartunnilin twice at 175 kr and the Norðoyatunnilin once at 50 kr, 400 kr. Total for your own car, 450 kr. In a hire car at the rental rates, 100 + 350 + 100, 550 kr before the firm's own fee.

Set that beside the fuel for the same three days. The ledger's Faroese kilometres are 115 + 135 + 83 = 333 km, which at 7.5 l/100 km is 25.0 litres, and Magn's posted price for 95 E10 from 23 October 2026 is 15.75 kr a litre: 393 kr. The tunnels cost more than the petrol. That is the arithmetic the ledger's cost section was pointing at when it called the tolls "the fees to know".

The Iceland parallel

The same ledger meets the same mechanism in Iceland, where the Hornafjörður section of Route 1 is tolled by camera at ISK 1,500 per trip (Vegagerðin, 31 August 2026) and the Vaðlaheiði tunnel into Akureyri is paid at veggjald.is, 2,216 ISK a car within 24 hours before or after the trip (price list valid from 2 March 2026, read 1 November 2026). Days 10 and 11 cross Hornafjörður twice: 3,000 ISK. A traveller who has learned to pay Tunnil within six days has learned the Icelandic habit too, and the honest difference is that Iceland's tolls are on the one road you have to use, while the Faroese ones are on islands you chose to visit.
