A Danish summer road trip: Copenhagen to Skagen in four days
541 km from Copenhagen to Grenen by Kronborg, the Storebælt bridge, Aarhus and Aalborg: legs computed on OSRM, the bridge toll and the Skagen season read 1 November 2026.
Copenhagen to Skagen is a day of motorway if you drive it straight — 522 km and just under six hours by OSRM, computed 1 November 2026 — but it is a better road trip in four, with Kronborg and Louisiana on the first morning, a night in Aarhus or Odense, and two nights at the top of Jutland. Drive it between late March and late October, when the Sandormen runs at Grenen, and best in June, when Skagen has 18 hours of daylight. The one fixed cost on the road is the Storebælt bridge: 205 kr one way for a car up to 6 m with automatic payment, 235 by card or cash, from the bridge's own 2026 price list.
The legs

Copenhagen to Grenen through Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg is 541.3 km and 6 hours 34 minutes at the wheel, computed in one OSRM route; the direct route to Skagen is 522.4 km and 5 hours 51. The coast day is 49.2 km out to Kronborg by Humlebæk and 47.1 km straight back, about 1 h 40 of driving in all by OSRM, which is why it is a separate morning.
Day one: the Øresund coast
Leave Copenhagen early for Kronborg, 47 km and 45 minutes by OSRM; the castle opens at 10:00 and, in the 2026 summer season, closes at 17:00 every day, adult 150 DKK at the gate or 135 kr online, children free. Its public car park at Nordhavnsvej fills around midday in summer, the castle says, so arrive before 10:30. In the afternoon, Louisiana at Humlebæk is 10 km south, with a free car park at the entrance and adult entry at DKK 145, under-18s free; it is closed on Mondays, so do not start this trip on one. Back to Copenhagen for the night, or on west.
Day two: across Zealand and Funen
The Storebælt bridge is the toll. Its 2026 price list, effective from 1 January, gives a car 3–6 m long 205 kr one way as the express price, which needs an active Bizz or number-plate agreement, and 235 kr paid by card or cash; a car over 6 m is 314 kr express. Weekend, evening and holiday discounts exist only with a Storebælt private agreement. Odense, 165 km from Copenhagen, is the lunch stop or the night; Aarhus, another 145 km, is the night if you want a city.
Day three: up the spine of Jutland to Skagen
Aarhus to Aalborg is 120 km, Aalborg to Skagen 109. Skagen is the end of the road. In the evening, walk out to Grenen: the Sandormen tractor bus runs from the car park to the tip every day from 28 March to 24 October 2026, 40 kr return for an adult, 20 kr under 12, cash on board or card at the machine. On foot it is free, about 1.2 km in a straight line from the museum by the car park to the mapped tip, and the last part is sand. Bathing at the tip is not allowed because of the currents, the regional tourism site says; wading to stand in two seas is the custom. The car park takes card or mobile payment only.
Day four: Skagen, then Hirtshals or home
Skagens Museum, the painters' museum, showed hours of Tuesday to Sunday 10.00–16.00 on its page today, closed on Mondays; check its summer hours and prices on skagensmuseum.dk. Råbjerg Mile, the moving dune south of the town, is the other sand stop; no authority page for it could be opened today. From Skagen, Hirtshals is 50 km and 50 minutes by OSRM: the port for Norway and for the Norröna to the Faroes and Iceland, which makes this trip the first days of the Iceland and Faroe Islands by ferry journey stretched out. Back to Copenhagen is 522 km direct.
Why June
The NOAA equations, computed for Skagen station, give 18 hours 6 minutes of daylight on 21 June 2027, sunrise 04:16 and sunset 22:22, and 17 hours 26 minutes on 15 July. On 21 December 2026 Skagen has 6 hours 32 minutes. Copenhagen on 21 June has 17 hours 32. The further north the night, the longer the evening at Grenen. The Sandormen's 2026 season ran 211 days, 28 March to 24 October; outside it the tip is walk-only.
What it costs, and what was not checked
Fixed costs read today: the bridge, 205 or 235 kr each way; Kronborg 150 DKK; Louisiana DKK 145; the Sandormen 40 kr. Fuel, accommodation and the Grenen parking tariff were not read today and are left out; the Denmark country page carries the site's dated fuel figure. The Helsingør–Helsingborg ferry, from 199 kr for a car booked ahead on its operator's site, turns the first day into a Swedish loop if the trip is longer.
