Hofsós

Hofsós is a small fishing village on the east shore of Skagafjörður, north of the Ring Road on the coast road towards Siglufjörður. For a route planner it is a detour, not a waypoint: from Varmahlíð, where Route 1 crosses Skagafjörður, it is 49 km and about 40 minutes each way by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, so a visit costs the best part of three hours on the Akureyri–Borgarnes day of the Ring Road ledgers.
The reason most people turn off is the municipal pool on Suðurbraut, which the Skagafjörður municipality runs alongside its pools in Sauðárkrókur and Varmahlíð, and whose page singles out the view from Hofsós. Its price list, read on 1 November 2026, gives adult entry as 1,400 ISK and free entry for under-sevens, with swimsuit and towel hire at 850 ISK each. The same page gave no opening hours for Hofsós on that date, so phone the pool on +354 455 6070 before driving out; this stop is marked for checking until a timetable can be read on the municipality's own page.
The practical line: N1 lists a fuel station in the village (n1.is, read 1 November 2026); no chain grocery is on the Bónus, Krónan, Nettó or Kjörbúðin store lists, so do the food shop before leaving Route 1. Safety: in winter, safetravel.is sends drivers to umferdin.is for road conditions and vedur.is for the forecast, and advises waiting somewhere safe for conditions to improve rather than driving on into a storm.
