The Baldur crossing is the hinge of any Westfjords route. Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur via Flatey is about two and a half hours on the water and replaces most of a day's driving round the head of Breiðafjörður; it lands you on route 62 within an hour of Látrabjarg, Patreksfjörður and the Dynjandi road.
Cadence: the operator's page, read today, carried a notice instead of a timetable. "Baldur is in dry dock in Hafnarfjörður. The vessel is expected to remain in dry dock until late November", and "Baldur's regular sailing schedule is not in effect while Baldur is in dry dock"; a passenger boat is running Stykkishólmur to Flatey only, Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with no vehicles. The normal pattern in recent timetables has been morning and afternoon sailings from Stykkishólmur on some weekdays and a single afternoon sailing on others, with no Saturday sailing in winter, but that is not a current schedule: check ferja.is for the dated timetable before building a day around it.
Fares, from ferja.is today for the winter season 1 September 2026 to 31 May 2027: adult 6,300 ISK one-way, a regular car up to five metres 6,300 ISK with the driver not included, campers and larger vehicles up to five metres 9,180 ISK plus 2,500 ISK per additional metre; children up to 12 travel free with their parents. Vehicles must be booked.
The practical line: no fuel, no shop at Brjánslækur. Fill at Stykkishólmur or, coming the other way, at Patreksfjörður. Phone signal is patchy at the landing. On arrival, route 62 west climbs the Kleifaheiði pass on gravel; check umferdin.is in winter.
