Trollstigen is the eleven-hairpin climb on Fv63 between Åndalsnes and Valldal, the northern half of the Geiranger–Trollstigen scenic route, and on a journey it is a decision rather than a stop: either the road is open and it is the way between Romsdal and the Geirangerfjord, or it is shut and you go round by the E136 and the Rv15 or the Eidsdal ferry, adding most of a day.
What the authorities' pages say as of today. The scenic-route site (run by Statens vegvesen) lists past closing dates from 5 October to 7 December and past openings from 29 April to 12 June, with night and bad-weather closures possible after opening. Fjord Norway's closure page, which cites the roads administration and was updated 16 September 2026, says the road opened as normal in 2026 after maintenance and rockfall-protection work, and that from Monday 28 September the section between Trollstigfoten and the plateau is closed Monday to Friday 07.00–18.00 for up to four weeks, reopening at 18.00 on weekdays and staying open around the clock at weekends, with the plateau still reachable from the Valldal side. Yr's road-message feed shows the same weekday closure with an end date of 2 November 2026. The 2024 season was largely lost to a rockfall and the protection work that followed. The vegvesen.no winter-closed-roads list itself returned an error today, so the live status is the one thing you must check on the Vegvesen Trafikk app or by calling 175 before committing.
Timing: forty-five minutes covers the plateau walkways; two hours if you drive down, turn and come back up for the view. Quiet is before 09.00 and after the last coach around 17.00. Fuel and shops are in Åndalsnes or Valldal, not on the mountain.
