Klaksvík is the last full-service town before the northern islands, and the reason to plan around it is simple: beyond here the roads are tunnels, ferries and dead ends, and nothing else north has a supermarket of any size. Fill the tank and the cool box here whether you are heading for Viðareiði, the Kalsoy ferry or just the Norðoyatunnilin back south.
The toll arithmetic is specific. Tunnil.fo prices the Norðoyatunnilin at 50 kr. one-way for a car without a subscription (10 kr. with one) and levies it only when you drive out of Klaksvík towards Eysturoy; the inbound run is free. Nothing is paid at the tunnel; the plate is read and you pay online within six days (tunnil.fo, read 1 November 2026; after that an invoice with a DKK 50 fee), or the hire company pays and recharges you. A rental car with a tunnel package removes the question.
As a stop it is forty-five minutes if you are only shopping, longer if you walk the harbour or the church, and it is a reasonable overnight if the northern islands are a full day. SSL bus 400 links it to Tórshavn and route 500 runs on to Viðareiði, which matters if someone in the party is not driving.
Winter is where Klaksvík earns its place. The approach from the south is sub-sea and weatherproof, so it is reachable when the exposed mountain roads of Streymoy are not; Landsverk's webcams include Viðareiðisvegurin, the road north from here, and the authority's September 2026 note says radio coverage has finally been installed in the Viðareiði tunnel. Quiet hours are weekday mornings; Saturday afternoon is when the whole north shops.
