Norway, month by month
Daylight is computed for Oslo on the 15th; roads, ferries and prices are the planner's sourced notes. See the country page for how to get there.

How to read the rows
Norway's year on this site is two seasons that barely overlap. The western fjord route needs the mountain roads, and those open in late spring and close in autumn; the Troms aurora route needs darkness, and that runs from October to March. There is no month in which both are at their best, which is a reason to treat them as two trips and not one.
The fjord season
Bergen to Ålesund by the valley roads is drivable all year, but the three pieces that make the route worth seven days are seasonal: the Geiranger mountain road down from Rv15, Trollstigen, and the upper road to Stegastein. Statens vegvesen opens them when the snow allows and closes them when it returns, typically May to October, with no fixed dates. Trollstigen has also been closed for whole seasons by rockfall, and the tourist board reported an unusually early opening on 27 April in 2026; vegvesen.no's traffic information is the only source to trust for the day you drive. June is the fjord route's best month: everything is open, the waterfalls are at full flow, and the Norwegian holiday crowds have not yet arrived. September is the last reliable month and the quietest.
The aurora season
Tromsø at 69.6°N has a computed polar night from 29 November to 15 January and a midnight sun from 19 May to 26 July. The lights are seen from October to March, with February the best month on the coast for cold and clear air. The roads, the E8 from Finland and the coast roads around Tromsø, are open all winter and closed only in storms, when vegvesen.no runs convoys or shuts them for hours. Winter tyres with 3 mm of tread are required from 16 October to 30 April in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark and from 1 November to the first Sunday after Easter Monday elsewhere.
Ferries
The fjord ferries are road links and run all year, on winter and summer timetables published by Fjord1, Norled and Boreal; the summer timetables begin around May and carry more sailings. On a July Saturday the Molde and Linge ferries build queues that the ledgers do not count. The Hurtigruten coastal ships sail all year and are a separate trip.
Light
Oslo at 59.9°N has about six hours of daylight in mid-December and nearly nineteen in mid-June, computed with the NOAA formula; the fjord towns at 60 to 62°N are within an hour of that. Tromsø is a different planet: no sun at all for seven weeks, then no night for ten. The site computes the figure for any date on a route.
Prices
The fjords are high from June to August and low from October to April, with Easter and Whitsun as exceptions. Tromsø reverses it: high from December to March for the aurora and quiet in summer. Norway is upper band in every month for beds and food; the difference between seasons is availability more than price.
