Finland, month by month

Daylight is computed for Helsinki on the 15th; roads, ferries and prices are the planner's sourced notes. See the country page for how to get there.

How to read the rows

Finland's year on this site is Lapland's year, and Lapland's year is simple: winter from November to March, which is why anyone drives the road to Tromsø, and summer from June to August, which is pleasant and not the point. The roads do not close; what changes is the speed limit, the tyre law and the light.

Winter

Traficom requires winter tyres between November and March whenever the weather or road conditions call for them, with at least 3 mm of tread; in Lapland that is the whole period. Väylävirasto reduces speed limits to the winter limit during the autumn and restores the summer limits at the end of March or beginning of April, when conditions allow, so the 100 km/h main roads run at 80 and the motorways at 100 through the aurora season. The E75, road 79 and the E8 are ploughed and sanded main roads and are open all winter; the hazard is not the road but the dark and the reindeer on it.

The aurora season runs from late September to late March. December is the darkest month and the Christmas trade fills Rovaniemi's beds; January is the coldest and often the clearest; February and March have the cold without the Christmas prices and longer days to drive in, which is why the Lapland route's default date is in February. Kilpisjärvi at 69°N has a computed polar night from 2 December to 12 January; Rovaniemi, just below the Arctic Circle, keeps a couple of hours of sun even at midwinter.

Summer

Rovaniemi's computed midnight sun runs from 7 June to 6 July and Kilpisjärvi's from 22 May to 23 July. July is the warm month and the Finnish holiday month; the fells above Kilpisjärvi are walkable from late June. Mosquitoes are the summer condition of Lapland and no planner can fix them. September brings ruska, the autumn colour on the fells, and the first lights of the new season on the nights that are dark enough.

Ferries

None on the Lapland route. The Baltic ships from Helsinki to Stockholm and Tallinn sail daily all year and are the way into Finland by sea from Sweden; the Turku–Stockholm ships likewise. They are not seasonal in any way a route needs to plan for.

Light

Helsinki at 60.2°N has about six hours of daylight in mid-December and nineteen in mid-June, computed with the NOAA formula; the site computes the figure for the capital on any date. The north is a different scale, and the planner's rows give Rovaniemi and Kilpisjärvi separately.

Prices

Finland is mid band and the cheapest of the Nordic mainland countries for beds and food. Lapland reverses the national pattern: Rovaniemi and Levi are high from December to March, with Christmas and the Finnish ski weeks in late February the peaks, and low in the intervals. The ledgers use Statistics Finland's October 2026 average pump price for petrol 95 E10, which is the one dated official fuel figure on this site outside Iceland, Denmark and the Faroes.

Journeys in Finland

  1. Lapland aurora week: Rovaniemi to Tromsø

Rovaniemi, Levi, Kilpisjärvi and the E8 to Tromsø in February: 600 km, nine hours driving, nights at 66 to 70°N. The route to weigh against Iceland for the lights.
